Not just sugar – district heating, too
The Örtofta sugar factory began operating in 1890. In 1952, partly the factory underwent conversion to enable the production of white sugar instead of raw sugar. In 2019 we have connected the conversion to 100 percent white sugar.
The Örtofta sugar factory in southern Sweden is today the only sugar factory in Sweden and one of the largest and most efficient beet-processing factories in the whole of Europe.
We produce sugar, molasses and animal feed here. We sell half of the sugar to the retail sector and the other half to the food industry.
Since the 2006 sugar beet campaign, we have also been selling energy produced by the factory in Örtofta to surrounding district heating systems. This enables us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 8,500 tonnes per year – a significant environmental benefit. The energy that we feed into the district heating network corresponds to the annual consumption of around 3,000 single-family houses. Some of the employees in the Quality, Innovation, Production Support (QIPS) department are also based in Örtofta. A description of its activities can be found under the Braunschweig location.
